Trump Signals Putin-Zelenskyy Meeting in Istanbul

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump reiterated on Friday that a face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is inevitable, although he expressed frustration that it has yet to occur.

Speaking to reporters before his departure from the White House en route to Scotland, Trump was asked what it would take for such a summit to become a reality—potentially with him involved. "It’s going to happen, but it should have happened three months ago. It’s going to happen," he affirmed.

Earlier that same day, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed that Türkiye is stepping up efforts to facilitate the summit. Erdogan told reporters after Friday prayers in Istanbul that Türkiye aims to bring Trump and Putin together in Istanbul as part of its ongoing mediation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“This week, by holding talks with Putin and Trump, we will strive to see if we can bring these leaders together in Istanbul,” Erdogan stated.

On Wednesday, Moscow and Kyiv wrapped up their third round of peace talks in Istanbul, where both sides discussed potential pathways for advancing the peace process. During the talks, Kyiv proposed a summit of the leaders by the end of August. The Kremlin has maintained that a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy would only be feasible once a peace agreement is finalized.
